Time Management

Planning your day, protecting focus time and finishing what you start.

Also known as: time management for developers

Time management for engineers is less about squeezing more hours out of the day and more about deciding what gets your best time, and protecting it. A junior engineer’s day often mixes small, well-defined tasks with responding to other people. The skill is making room for the harder work too.

A simple daily routine helps. At the start of the day, pick the one or two items that matter most, and write them down. Put the hard item in a block when your focus is best, and leave shorter tasks for the gaps.

Today's must-do:
1. Finish the export bug (focus block, 10:00-12:00)
2. Review Ada's PR (after lunch)
Nice to do: update the onboarding doc

Finishing what you start matters as much as starting. Work that is 90% done but never merged still carries a cost, because it sits in your head and blocks other work. Close loops when you can, and say clearly when something is not going to happen.

The classic mistake is filling the day with many small tasks so that it feels busy, then having nothing to show for it. A full calendar and a long to-do list don’t measure progress. Look at what you actually finished, and adjust tomorrow based on that. Deep work covers how to protect the hard blocks.
