Daily Standup

A short daily sync on progress and blockers.

Also known as: daily standup, daily scrum, stand-up

A daily standup is a short meeting, usually held at the same time each day, where the team shares progress and raises blockers. Many teams keep it brief, often about fifteen minutes or less, and the format varies. Scrum calls the same meeting the Daily Scrum.

A common format covers three points: what I finished since yesterday, what I’m working on today, and anything blocking me. The goal is for everyone to see the state of the work and who might need help.

Ada: Finished the login form tests. Starting the password reset API. Blocked on the email provider keys.
Grace: Reviewing Ada's PR. No blockers.

The classic mistake is turning the standup into a status report for a manager, or a place to solve problems. People then report to one person instead of coordinating with each other. Keep the detail short, and take anything longer to a conversation afterwards with just the people involved.
