1:1 Meetings
Regular private conversations with your manager.
Also known as: one-on-one, 1-on-1, 1:1
A 1:1 is a regular, private meeting between you and your manager, typically once a week or every two weeks. It’s your time, and it’s a place for things that don’t fit in a group meeting: how the work is going, what’s blocking you, what you want to learn next, and how you feel about the team.
A simple shared agenda helps. Both of you can add topics beforehand, so the meeting covers what matters to each side.
Topics
- Current work: the search fix is nearly done, one question on the API
- Blocker: waiting on design sign-off for the empty state
- Growth: I want to learn how deployments work
- Feedback: anything you noticed in last week's review
Use the time for the things that only come up privately, including feedback in both directions. If something is going wrong, it’s better to say so here than to wait for a review.
The classic mistake is letting the manager’s status update take the whole meeting. Bring your own topics, and treat it as your conversation too. For more on this, see receiving feedback and finding a mentor.
