NIB

The business identification number that acts as an Indonesian company's main license.

Also known as: NIB, Nomor Induk Berusaha, business identification number

The NIB (Nomor Induk Berusaha) is the business identification number issued through Indonesia’s OSS system: one number that functions as company registration, and — depending on risk class — as the basic license to operate. For low-risk business lines it is effectively the whole license; higher-risk lines need further permits layered on top.

deed + approval → OSS application (KBLI lines determine risk class) → NIB issued
low risk: NIB suffices to operate · higher risk: NIB + additional permits

Get it early: banks, marketplaces, payment partners and enterprise customers ask for it, and operating sizable revenue without one compounds legal risk. Keep the underlying data (address, shareholders, KBLI lines) current — an NIB describing last year’s company invites trouble at exactly the moments (fundraise, audit, partnership) when scrutiny peaks.

The classic mistakes:

  • Trading without one. Informal operation works until it doesn’t — a dispute, a tax notice or a partner’s compliance check turns informality into liability overnight.
  • Assuming NIB equals all permits. It is the base layer. Sectoral licenses (finance, health, education, logistics) still apply on top; check your KBLI risk class rather than assuming.
  • Stale company data. Moved office, changed shareholders, pivoted business lines — unupdated records mismatch every counterparty check. Update with changes, not yearly.
  • DIYing complex cases. Straightforward local PTs can self-serve; foreign shareholders, regulated lines or group structures deserve a consultant who knows the current OSS behavior.

Sequence: deed → approval → NIB → NPWP tax number → sectoral permits as needed. See OSS RBA for the system behind it.
