Fundraising Metrics
The numbers investors expect at each stage: growth, retention and burn.
Also known as: fundraising metrics, VC metrics, investor metrics
Fundraising metrics are the numbers each round is really about: seed wants early traction and acceptable economics taking shape; Series A wants scalable growth with retention; later rounds want efficient scale. Same company, different evidence per stage — pitching Series A numbers at seed (or seed numbers at A) mismatches the conversation structurally.
seed: users/revenue appearing + retention not collapsing + plausible economics
Series A: growth rate + net retention + payback + path to scale (the engine works)
Series B+: efficiency at scale (margins, burn multiple, rule-of-40 direction)
Know your stage’s scoreboard cold and lead with it; keep the rest as backup. And report the honest versions — investors diligence every number against raw data, and the meeting where metrics unravel is the meeting that ends the process.
The classic mistakes:
- Stage-blind metrics. Seed decks heavy on five-year projections, Series A decks heavy on vision. Match evidence to stage: early = learning velocity + early traction; growth = scalable economics.
- Vanity-led decks. Registrations, totals, press — numbers that impress nobody doing diligence. Lead with retention, economics and growth quality (vanity metrics).
- Inconsistent definitions across materials. Deck MRR, data-room MRR and update-email MRR disagreeing. One definition set, used everywhere, reconciled to raw data.
- Missing the bridge metrics. Showing today’s numbers without the trajectory to next round’s bar. Every fundraise must answer: what will these dollars make true by next time?
- Hiding the bad number. Omitted churn discovered in diligence kills trust instantly. Present weaknesses with context and remediation plans — candor with a plan beats discovery without one.
Prepare per stage: the 5–8 numbers your stage demands, trended 12+ months, defined once, reconciled always. See funding stages for what each round buys with its evidence.
