Power Users

The small group that uses the product most, and what they teach you about fit.

Also known as: power users, superusers, heavy users

Power users are the small share driving outsized usage — the 5% generating half the activity. They are your microscope into value: what they do obsessively is the product’s core worth keeping; what they work around is the roadmap; what they say (if you ask) predicts what the mainstream will want six months later.

find them: top usage decile → interview → map their workflows → build for the pattern, not the person
use them: beta testers, reference calls, referral seeds, churn early-warning (when THEY fade, worry)

Treat them as leading indicators and design partners, not as the average user. They tolerate complexity the mainstream never will — building only for them creates a powerful tool nobody else can operate.

The classic mistakes:

  • Designing everything for power users. Advanced features piled on a confusing core repels the mainstream while delighting ten accounts. Serve power through depth (APIs, shortcuts, advanced modes), simplicity through defaults.
  • Ignoring their churn signals. A power user fading is a five-alarm fire — they leave last, so their departure predicts broader decay. Alert on power-user activity drops specifically.
  • Mistaking intensity for representativeness. Power workflows often differ structurally from mainstream needs. Mine them for insight, validate with broader cohorts before building.
  • Burning them as free QA. Endless beta requests without recognition or influence exhaust goodwill. Reciprocate: early access, direct lines, public credit, real roadmap influence.
  • Never converting them. Admiration without activation — studying power users while onboarding stays broken for everyone else. Their lessons must flow into the new-user path (activation).

The loop: identify → interview → build the pattern → onboard everyone else into it → find the next pattern. Power users are the R&D lab that pays you.
